Co.As.It. Italian Family History Group

1st January 2016  ~ end of May 2016 Report

by Chairman: Art Phillips (Arturo DiFilippo)

It has been a progressive year for the Co.As.It. Italian Family History Group since the start of 2016, featuring profile guest speakers at events we produce and host at Palace Cinemas, as well as guest seminars we deliver from time to time. I want to thank our Committee members for all their dedicated work, and to Co.As.It.’s General Manager Thomas Camporeale, Sara Villella, and to the Co.As.It. Board for their ongoing support.

Our monthly production events at Palace Cinemas have continued to be a highlight of what we do and deliver to the community, where we presented featured guest speakers from February 2016 through May 2016:

Father John Cooper – discussing the life accomplishments of

Padre Atanasio Gonelli OFM Cap

Dr. Lucia Barbera
 – delivering a wonderful lecture on the ‘Abandoned Children: The history of Foundlings and Child Welfare with a focus on Sicily in the  19th century.

Beatrice Iacono – speaking about the important and long lasting contribution made to the Italian and Australian community by her father and mother, Angelo and Carmela Mezzapica, where they established Mezzapica Continental Cakes in Leichhardt. This was the first Italian Cake shop in Sydney and Mezzapica Cakes continues today to be an institution.

And on May 25, our featured speaker Paul Signorelli, talking about his father and his immigration and thereon success:  “Life From a Suitcase” – The story of Biaggio Signorelli, who first set down his suitcase in Sydney in 1954, as a 19-year old from Sicily. He would go on to own a considerable slice of the beautiful waterfront real estate at Jones Bay Wharf at Pyrmont, NSW with the Doltone House Group.

In June, the IFHG will feature Danielle Gullaci- editor of ‘Italianicious Magazine’, talking about her work as creative journalist and editor for Prime Creative Pty Ltd’s  ‘Italianicious Magazine’, a sought after publication of Italian cuisine, travel, culture, wine, style, people and events.

We thank Antonio Zeccola and family of Palace Cinemas for their continued support and for the wonderful cinematic venue where we host our events, providing a real touch of class to what we do.

We also thank Jim Davis, our film and editing camera man / producer of visual medium, who continues to film all our events, which we archive on our website as a reference and educational resource.

The Italian Family History Group (IFHG) has had an incredible journey since it was founded in 1999, and my time as Committee member since 2012, then Chairman since 2013, has been a rewarding and fulfilling experience. I thank you all for giving me the honour to Chair the Group.

I have notified in writing to the Co.As.It. Board and our Committee of my resignation as Chairman of the IFHG, effective as of May 27, 2016. I recently returned from the USA and have been offered a series of overseas music scoring projects from Germany, France, Japan, the USA and Italy, the first of which I have already begun delivery on as our Committee is aware – hence my lack of responsibilities over the past two Committee meetings (I thank Anthony Ravesi, Deputy Chair, for taking over my role in both those instances).

Unfortunately, these projects will divert my focus away from my duties to the IFHG with an overabundance of business responsibilities and global challenges with my company, for at least the next 4 years.

May I take this opportunity to thank you for all for your support and encouragement that you have given me, and the IFHG, during my two and a half years as Chairman.

The Italian Family History Group thank our sponsors: Co.As.It. for their continued support, NSW Community Relations Commission (Multicultural NSW), Palace Cinemas, Strata Choice, SPHIC Health Insurance Consultancy, The Ron Seggi Radio Today Show in the USA, Frank Moschella and Bunna Bunno Olive Grove.

Yours sincerely

Art Phillips (Arturo DiFilippo)
